• Since  this  scrapbook began  about 3 years ago, there  have had different  people willing to help  defray the cost of creating the  site.  Now after three years, all is paid for except the yearly  cost of hosting which is rather large considering  the amount of information  involved. • At last, the 44 rolls of Micro film for the Galax Gazettes  have been digitized  and are  available for viewing at a link found on the Galax-Carroll Regional  Library Site. http://galaxcarroll.lib.va.us/  late  1930s,  most of the 40s and  then none of the 70s, why? No one knows why no mictro film was  produced for these years. Then a few of the 80s.

• The Library is now  in the process of digitizing  the microfilm rolls of the Carroll News. Stay tuned for this important developement. 

Welcome to the Galax Scrapbook, an online collection of early Galax history and current events, all of interest to today’s citizens. The purpose of this website is to introduce or reacquaint you with the history of Galax - its industrial history, the events that shaped our community and the people who built and sustained it. There are many people, born and raised in Galax, who are living in other communities but still want to stay connected to their town and friends. There is a wide variety of categories so be sure to view the entire site.

Growing out of two locations of the late 1800’s, Old Town and Blair, Galax was created by a group of men intent on creating a manufacturing locale second to none. With the arrival of the railroad in 1903, Galax (known then as Bonaparte) was off to a good start.

One of our most viewed pages is a wide-angle mural of early Galax. View photo images and information about each portion of the photograph of downtown Galax as it appeared around 1905-1906. 20 buildings are identified and numbered. ( clickhere to see)

The Galax Scrapbook, with images of yesterday and today, will help create a greater interest in our town and its future. You can view images like the original First National Bank Building, Miss America Kylene Barker, Medal of Honor winner Sgt. Charles Morris, the fire at Vaughan Bassett Furniture Company and Bill Halsey, Galax's Potentate to Kazim Temple.

The early history includes pictures of  Galax, its businesses ( like R E Jones and Sons), homes   (like Cherry Hill home of J A Messer SR.), industries ( like Edwards Chair Co.), street scenes and the first taxi in Galax which together created a town that by the1950’s  was said to have more industry per person than any other place in the country.

There is a place for Galax School groups like the Cheer Leaders , Graduation Classes such as GHS 1928, local events and other things of interest. Later, it’s possible that we could offer a blog section for each high school class to help them keep in touch.

A large portion of the articles pertaining to the 1956 Golden Jubilee Celebration and the 1976  BICENTENNIAL CELEBRATION have been included.  The Galax Story, A Town is Born, Industry and Mfg., Government, Schools and Churches, Hospitals, Newspapers, and some Black History of the Galax Area including the Rosenwald-Felts School. You can find this in the "Galax History" Section under "A Compilation of Articles On the History of Galax "  " Galax: Life and Times in the History of America"

The way to start is to click on the "Galax History" link on the left, or the Historical Timeline just below. Also try searching for any name or keyword.

Also, to make it easier to read over a period of time, articles are first added to either the "Latest Flash from the Past" (if it is history) or to the "Newest Current Event" (if it will soon be history but not quite yet).These two categories are to the left just below Home/Login

Any items you are no longer interested in keeping in your possession can be turned over to the Matthews Museum in Galax so that others may enjoy and benefit from the history.

 

The Gazette has now become available only to those folks with either a subscription  to the Paper published 3 times a week or to the online edition. You can sign-up for either or both online.
